Wahine adjust
to stifle Shockers
The UH women's basketball

team posts its second consecutive
tournament sweep
Star-BulletinHawaii head coach Vince Goo and his staff knew Wichita State had quick guards, could shoot the 3-pointer and liked to lob pass to the post if the defense over-compensated against the 3-pointer.
"We knew if we played good defense on the post and put pressure on the ball, it would prevent them from throwing the lob," said UH forward Hedy Liu.
The strategy worked most of the night as the Wahine won the Hawaii Invitational with a 75-55 victory over the Shockers.
It was UH's second consecutive tournament sweep and raised the Wahine record to 7-2.
"We didn't want to give up the open 3," said tournament MVP Raylene Howard who led Hawaii with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
"We tried to force them toward the baseline, make them put it (the ball) on the floor, pull up and shoot the jumper."
UH set its defense half a step inside the arc (19 feet, 9 inches from the basket) only to have WSU's Keomi Johnson bury her first 3-pointer from 25 feet.
"Kylie (Galloway) looks over and says 'should I adjust?'," said Goo. "I said you've got to. We went to half a step outside the arc."
The Shockers made just 2-of-22 3-point attempts after that.
It was quite a contrast to Friday's game against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, when the UH defenders were a step slow in contesting shots from beyond the arc.
To compliment their strong defensive effort, the Wahine made 64 percent of their field goals in the first half to take a 41-25 lead at intermission.
"They came in with five rebounders and didn't have a safety," said UH point guard Kyla Evers, an all-tournament pick.
"So, as long as we got the rebound and kicked the outlet pass we were able to run and gun."
With the Shockers (5-4) shooting just 29 percent (11-for-37) from the field in the first half, there were rebound opportunities and the Wahine picked 20 off the defensive boards.
Wichita State made one run midway through the second half, closing the deficit to nine points.
Tina Nichols hit a 3-pointer and LaTeesha Hill, who scored 23 points, made three consecutive baskets.
But, following a timeout for a defensive adjustment, the Wahine went on a 15-4 run to get the lead back to 20 (66-46) with 4:03 to play.
Hawaii received 15 points from Dainora Puida, 14 from Galloway, also an all-tournament selection, and 14 from Evers.
"I think all three nights we played well offensively. We were up and down defensively, didn't do the little detail things, but I thought we played their personnel pretty good tonight," Goo said.
"We've played nine games. We've faced a different bunch of people and different kinds of teams with different strengths and weaknesses. It's been a good learning experience."
The next Wahine tournament is the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic, Dec. 21-23, with games against Fairfield, Princeton and Vanderbilt.
