Overtime scare
for Wahine

Star-BulletinA 12-day layoff between games may have affected the Hawaii Wahine basketball team physically but it was no excuse for the mental errors that permeated yesterday's effort.
"You can be off for a whole month and not make that many mental mistakes," UH head coach Vince Goo said. "But, you're never disappointed when you win."
Hawaii (5-2) survived by tightening its defense late and edged a hot-shooting Wisconsin-Milwaukee team, 87-85, in overtime in the first round of the Hawaii Invitational at Klum Gym.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee seemed ripe for a blowout loss early in the second half, when UH built its lead to 16 points, 48-32.
But the Panthers (3-3) responded and kicked their offense into high gear with quick, accurate passes that produced 60 percent shooting from the field over the next 11 minutes, six seconds.
During that span, the Panthers outscored the Wahine, 34-13, and took a five-point lead, 66-61. They were adept at passing around the perimeter or passing into to a semi-high post, then kicking the ball out for a 3-point attempt.
Teri Stoltenberg hit three treys and Jessica Wilhite one. And, Corrin Van Wald scored eight of her team-high 20 points during the comeback.
Goo even called one 30-second timeout and a full timeout during the Panthers' run to no avail.
"We knew what they were going to do, but we just weren't recovering and closing out (getting a defender in the shooters' face) like we did the last minute and a half of regulation," Goo said. "During the overtime, I think we defended a lot better."
Goo had his defenders pick up the Panthers earlier, forcing them to dribble more and disrupting some of the passing lanes.
"We were lethargic, weren't talking, missed some key box outs and didn't force them to the baseline," said Kylie Galloway, who scored 18 points for UH.
"There were stages where we didn't get into our offensive set as quickly as possible and we didn't always play the defense Vince called," Raylene Howard said. "The noise was incredible."
It was good old Klum Gym on Nostalgia Day where 420 fans sound much louder than a 1,000 in the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Wahine managed three ties as regulation wound down, the last coming on Howard's layup with 12 seconds left.
The Panthers came up court with a chance to win. They put up three shots after time expired, but nobody realized that since the horn didn't go off (the automatic switch wasn't turned on).
Hawaii took the lead 52 seconds into overtime on Galloway's 3-pointer. The Wahine remained ahead, but the lead was shaky until Galloway sank another 3-pointer on a play designed for Howard.
Up by three points with 47 seconds left in overtime, Goo called a timeout to set the play.
Off the inbounds pass, Howard drove left past the foul line hoping to go to the hoop. But she was double teamed.
Instead of trying to muscle between the Panthers, she passed back to Galloway, who made her fifth 3-pointer, giving UH a 86-80 lead.
Galloway started the game by missing her first two 3-point shots, but wasn't phased by the lack of success, making five of her last six attempts from behind the arc.
"If you're a shooter and miss, a miss will make you want to take the shot again," she said.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee's final points came on Wilhite's 3-pointer with two seconds to play.
After a Panther time out, the Wahine successfully inbounded to Howard, who was fouled just before, just as or just after the buzzer went off. But it didn't matter because the referees determined the game was over.
Howard, who guided several field goals into the basket while off balance or falling down, finished with a 28 points and 10 rebounds.
Kyla Evers also posted a double- double with 16 points and 11 caroms.
Oregon State 61, Wichita State 57: The Beavers (3-3) stopped a three-game losing streak by maintaining a one to seven point lead throughout the second half in a game plagued by 58 fouls.
OSU used balanced scoring to offset a 24 -point effort by the Shockers' LaTeesha Hill.
Sissel Pierce led the Beavers with 11 points while Ericka Cook, Nicole Funn and Reda Petraitis each scored 10.
"It's nice to come out, work hard, have a good effort and stay focused," OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra said.
"We have a young team and didn't do that last week."
"I thought Reda on the offensive boards and Nicole, on the boards (seven rebounds each) with her spark, played well."
Hill made a basket with 18 seconds left to pull WSU (5-2) to within two (59-57), but Chassie Wiersma sank two free throws with .07 on the clock to seal the victory.
