Driver in crash that
killed five was paroled

Question: What ever happened to Bucky Lake, responsible for five traffic deaths near Makapuu in 1988?

Answer: Lake, who received an eight-year minimum on a 10-year maximum sentence for manslaughter convictions, was paroled Nov. 13, 1996. His parole status expired Nov. 8, 1998.

At that time, Lake was a resident of Washington state. "The last that we heard he was still in Washington," said Max Otani, acting parole and pardons administrator, Hawaii Paroling Authority.

Lake was convicted of five counts of manslaughter Nov. 8, 1989. Although his blood alcohol content had been 0.15, when the legal requirement was 0.10 for drunken driving, he was never charged with drunken driving. The crash occurred June 9, 1988. Lake's car slammed head-on into a van filled with tourists from Georgia.

Lake, then 22, was charged initially with five counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Ayce Esteban, 16; Jeremy Ng, 18; and Ross Leilamatafao, 21, who were riding in his car; and van occupants Marsha Milam, 40; and her mother, Rita Snider, 69.
