Association books 2003 isle meeting
The Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau has booked a key convention for August 2003 of association executives who have a lot to say about where their own organizations hold meetings and exhibitions.Some 5,500 members and guests are expected for the convention of the American Society of Association Executives at the Hawaii Convention Center.
The HVCB estimates that the convention will generate $14.2 million in visitor spending.
The HVCB earlier booked three other conventions of meetings professionals, the International Association for Exposition Management in 2001, the Meeting Professionals International in 2002 and the Professional Convention Management Association in 2005.
Hawaiian Air contract talks
Hawaiian Airlines Inc. will begin contract talks next week with the union representing its roughly 350 pilots.The contract with the Air Line Pilots Association International opens for amendments Feb. 28. The contract has been in effect since 1996.
Microsoft, Ericsson form joint venture
STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Microsoft Corp. and Sweden's LM Ericsson AB are forming a joint venture to develop products for consumers to access the Internet and send e-mail from any wireless device.The new company will use Ericsson's mobile communications technology, Microsoft's Windows operating system and a new Microsoft Mobile Explorer software platform.
Air Canada extends Canadian Air offer
TORONTO -- Air Canada extended its offer last night to purchase its struggling rival, Canadian Airlines International, until Dec. 23 to give itself more time to negotiate with the AMR Corp., the parent of American Airlines, the largest shareholder in Canadian Airlines.The $63 million offer by Air Canada had been scheduled to expire yesterday.
