Isle surfers struggling

Nine Hawaii surfers were bounced out of the Rip Curl Cup after yesterday's first round in 10- to 12- foot waves at Sunset Beach.

Among the local casualties were Michael Ho, Benji Weatherley, David Gonsalves, Mikala Jones, Bruce Irons and Jason Shibata.

Winning Hawaii pros included Love Hodel, Tory Barron, Jason Bogle and Tamayo Perry.

Seeded surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb of Hawaii drew first-round byes and were to go today in round 2.


UH swimmers pile up wins

University of Hawaii swimmers returned home from Long Beach, Calif., yesterday after an excellent showing in the 1999 Speedo Cup.

Competing against 36 teams, many of them in the national top 20, the 'Bows racked up 11 wins in 13 men's events, and two in 13 women's finals during the three day meet.

The UH teams will host Denver Wednesday at Duke Kahanamoku Pool. The meet starts at 3:30 pm. and includes a rematch of the 'Baywatch-UH coaches challenge' and a tribute to recently retired diving coach Wally Nakamoto.

It will be televised on Channel 5 at 6 pm.
