UH’s Jones, Galloway
get QB Club nod

Hawaii football coach June Jones and Rainbow Wahine basketball player Kylie Galloway have been named the Honolulu Quarterback Club sports persons of the month for November.

In his first season as UH coach, Jones guided the Rainbows to an 8-4 finish, a huge turnabout from their 0-12 tumble in 1998. He is a finalist for national Coach of the Year honors.

Galloway is the top scorer for the Wahine (4-2) and was an all-tournament selection after leading them to the championship of their Asahi Classic last weekend.

Veriato three shots back in PGA Senior Tour qualifier

Steve Veriato, formerly of Hawaii, shot a 72 for a share of 11th place at 142 after the second round of the PGA Senior Tour National Qualifying yesterday at Tucson, Ariz.

Veriato was three strokes behind leader Mark Hayes, who shot a 68 for a 139 total on the par-72 Omni Tucson National Course.

The top eight players will receive exempt status for the 2000 Senior PGA Tour. Players from 9 to 16 will get partial playing privileges.

Shoji golf tourney to benefit UH Wahine volleyball program

The first Dave Shoji Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 17, at the Koolau Golf Club

Golfers will have a chance to play and mingle with a number of NCAA Division I volleyball coaches who will be in Hawaii for the national championship tournament and AVCA coaches meeting.

Registration is from 11 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon shotgun start. The fee for the two-man scramble is $300 per team, which includes a banquet and prizes.

Special Olympics holiday fest

More than 900 Special Olympics athletes and coaches from the islands will take part in the 1999 Holiday Classic tomorrow through Sunday at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base, the Ice Palace, Pali Lanes and Kailua High School.

Basketball players, bowlers and ice skaters have been training for the big event.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the K-Bay Enlisted Club, highlighted by the parade of athletes and featuring the 25th Infantry Tropic Lightning Band.

McKinley benefit tree sale

McKinley High School is conducting a Christmas tree sale to benefit its athletes.

The 6- to 7-foot trees can be picked up Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McKinley cafeteria.

They cost $45.
