Trash or treasure?
Cynthia Oi
Star-BulletinThat old Japanese scroll with the rabbit and the moon, the one you rescued from the trash can when your aunty cleaned out her house, may be worth some big bucks. Or not.
You can find out at the antique appraisal clinic that will be part of the Honolulu Holiday Antiques & Collectible Show taking place tomorrow through Sunday at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
The clinic follows the success of the PBS television program, "Antiques Road Show," where appraisers travel around the country, evaluating pieces brought for inspection by ordinary people.
The $2 cost of each appraisal will benefit Ronald McDonald House charities, said Judy Allman, who with her husband Steve are putting on the antiques show.
Appraisers from McClain Auction Service and Antique Alley will examine items. Among the appraisers will be "Pake" Zane, an expert in Hawaiian and collectible pieces, said Steve Allman.
Judy Allman said pieces handed down from generation to generation in Hawaii's Asian families may now be worth considerable amounts of money.
Also of value may be old photographs, Hawaiiana, "anything to do with Hawaiian history," Steve Allman said.
