festivities SaturdayThe parade is part of Honolulu City Lights and this year's theme is "When You Wish Upon a Star."
Colby's wish was to be a fireman. HFD and the Make A Wish Foundation designed a training program for Colby, who has leukemia. The program included tours of department facilities and equipment. Following his training he was named honorary junior captain and he will represent HFD in the parade.
The Honolulu City Lights celebration begins at 5 p.m. Saturday with entertainment for the keiki on the front lawn of Honolulu Hale and a service at Kawaiahao Church.
At 6 p.m. Mayor Jeremy Harris will light the city Christmas tree and downtown merchants and government offices will switch on their holiday lights. The parade also begins at 6, proceeding down King Street from Bishop to Honolulu Hale. More than 25 floats as well as marching bands from nine local high schools and the Royal Hawaiian Band are expected to participate.
Santa's float is expected to reach Sky Gate at 6:30 p.m. where he will hear children's Christmas wishes until 9 p.m. Grown-ups can aim their wishes at the more than 2,000 stars suspended from the ceiling of City Hall. Also in Honolulu Hale, christmas tree and wreath exhibits will be on display through Jan. 2 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
Keola Beamer, Henry Kapono, Forte, Brother Noland, Eric Gilliom, Sean Na'auao, Anela, Chant, Brownskin and The Four Divas will perform from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. near Sky Gate in a show produced by Tom Moffat.
The parade and a portion of the concert will be broadcast from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday on KITV-4 and Channel 54.
