Wahine hold on to
By Al Chase
beat Rams
Star-BulletinThe Virginia Commonwealth Rams presented Hawaii with a different challenge yesterday.
After battling back in all three games last weekend, the Wahine had to battle to stay ahead yesterday in the opening round of the Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Enjoying a rare height advantage, the Wahine twice built 14-point leads in the first half, before heading to the locker room on the plus side of a 40-28 score.
Then with 6:27 to play and holding an 18-point lead, the Wahine watched the Rams come close to wiping that advantage completely off the scoreboard.
Kristine Austgulen, a 6-foot freshman forward from Bergen, Norway, hit two 3 pointers. Junior guard Liz Remus sank another.
Half of the 18-point lead was gone. It took less than a minute.
Tawanda Washington made a short jumper. Austgulen canned another 3 pointer. The UH lead was down to four points.
UH's Hedy Liu missed two free throws. Christen Roper makes one of two from the charity stripe, the first point the Wahine had scored in almost four minutes.
Guess what? Austgulen sank another 3 pointer. UH was up by two, 66-64, with 2:40 to play.
"Give her (Austgulen) a lot of credit for knocking them down," UH head coach Vince Goo said. "She was 0-for-1 (on 3 pointers) coming into the game. We wanted to be a little tighter on her, but we didn't get out there in time."
"She's been a steady player for us, but today I think she wanted to send a message to the coaches, VCU head coach David Glass said.
"I think we're going to have to look to her more as a scoring threat."
Kylie Galloway, who led Hawaii with 19 points, and Washington then traded baskets.
However, in the final 2:05, the Wahine outscored the Rams, 9-0, with seven of those points coming on free throws, four by Galloway, two by Kyla Evers and one by Dainora Puida. Raylene Howard's short jumper in the lane was the only basket by either team.
"With the timeout at two minutes we just told the kids it's a brand new ball game," Goo said.
"We want to run, but you don't have the run opportunity when they don't miss very often."
"It caught us off guard when she (Austgulen) was hitting from anywhere and everywhere," Howard said. "Give credit to them. They fought hard, but I think you have to give credit to us for sticking in there. We kept playing."
The Wahine were able to run some in the first half and their offense looked more polished than a week ago. Only two of their 14 field goals came from outside.
"We did a lot better job with showing discipline in the first half, which we didn't in our first three game," Goo said. "By discipline, I mean run when it is a good opportunity and get into a half-court set when we need to. I think we made some good decisions."
Evers is displaying more poise at point guard, her new position, each time out. She had eight assists, just three turnovers, made five steals and scored 10 points.
"There was a lot of pressure today," Evers said. "We tried to post up with anyone we could. If it's working, we'll go with it until it doesn't work anymore."
"Going inside was something we worked on all week," said Howard, who scored 15 points.
"We hadn't been achieving that in our other games and it's a really big part of our offense. Our post players are still learning, but they are doing a real good job."
"I still have to go through it (the offense) in my head, but it was working for us and we stayed with it until they got wise," said 6-foot-5 freshman center Kristen Roper.
She scored eight points and had a game-high 11 rebounds.
The 6-4 Puida added five points, blocked four shots and grabbed eight rebounds.
Hawaii plays Washington in a semifinal at 1:20 p.m. today.
