HILO -- Top-ranked Cincinnati had a 29-point lead over Cleveland State and there were just under four minutes to play.

It would be easy to assume that a coach in that situation would be sitting back, thinking about the next practice or game.

Not Bob Huggins. Not even in yesterday's 91-56 victory in the opening round of the Big Island Invitational.

He was really upset with the way his reserve big men -- Donald Little and B.J. Grove -- were rebounding and called a 30-second timeout to let them know.

It turned into a full TV timeout and Huggins, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, never let up, yelling at the two from close range. It must have seemed to Grove and Little that the ball didn't come back inbounds for two hours instead of two minutes.

After the game, Huggins was blunt about the lecture heard by everybody in the crowd of about 1,000 in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

"We don't ever go out there and not play hard, ever," he said. "When you wear Cincinnati you give it everything you have and they weren't. They were being pushed around under the boards."

The Bearcats (2-0) did look impressive in beating the Vikings (0-2) for the 11th time in as many meetings.

Kenyon Martin had 20 points, Steve Logan added 17 and DerMarr Johnson had 15 for Cincinnati, which led 49-29 at halftime.

Martin, the senior center and two-time Conference USA defensive player of the year, had 11 points in the final five minutes of the first half. Johnson, a 6-foot-9 freshman guard, had seven, including two 3-pointers, in a run earlier in the half when the Bearcats took the lead for good.

"There are so many guys who can do so many things on this team," Martin said.

"We have plenty of players on our team who can take over a game for a while, or for the whole game," Johnson said. "Me, I'm a streaky kind of person and I just got off there for a while."

Cleveland State (0-2) came out with some impressive intensity in its first game ever against a No. 1 team, but the Vikings, led by James Madison's 14 points, couldn't sustain it.

"They are very, very athletic and very aggressive," said Cleveland State coach Rollie Massimino, no stranger to playing No. 1 teams from his days at Villanova when the Wildcats beat No. 1 Georgetown in the 1985 national championship game. "I thought we hung in there pretty good for about 14 minutes, but we had to stick to the game plan and didn't."
