Washington Place will host a piano performance
of "Nutcracker Suite."



Sounds of the season at
Washington Place

Students of the Ernest Chang Piano Studio will perform a two-piano version of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" with narration Dec. 3 and 5 at Washington Place.

The program, "Christmas at Washington Place" is a benefit for Hawaii Public Radio and the Washington Place Foundation. This is the second year for an event that the HPR staff wants to become an annual affair.

The Dec. 3 program, with HPR president Michael Titteron narrating, starts at 7 p.m.; the Dec. 5 show begins at 4 p.m. with Hawaii first lady Vicky Cayetano as narrator. Refreshments will be served on the Washington Place lanai a half hour before each performance.

The event also presents an opportunity to view the holiday decorations at the governor's mansion while enjoying the classic tale about a little girl's attempts to repair her broken nutcracker.

Tickets are $25 general; $20 for HPR members; and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Call 955-8821.

Bullet Scholarship for women returning to college: Applications for the Talbots Women's Scholarship are available for women returning to college later in life by calling 781-741-7114 or 1-800-TALBOTS. The program will award five women with $10,000 scholarships and fifty women with $1,000 scholarships for undergraduate study beginning in the fall of 2000. Entries must be postmarked no later than March 6, 2000. Only the first 1000 entries received will be considered for the award.

Applicants must be women who reside in the United States and plan to return to a four-year accredited college or university no later than fall of 2000; plan to enroll part-time or full-time to complete an undergraduate baccalaureate degree, and have completed at least one semester of college a minimum of five years prior to September 30, 2000.

Bullet Elks launch scholarship sontest: The Elks National Foundation will award nearly $2.1 million in college scholarships to a total of 500 high school seniors nationwide through its "Most Valuable Student" scholarship contest. The contest is open to students of a high school graduating class who are citizens of the United States. Applications are available at the Elks' homepage http://www.elks.org; at local Elks' lodges or at local high schools; or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Elks Foundation, 2750 N. Lakeview Ave.,Chicago, Ill. 60614. The filing deadline is Jan. 14, 2000.

Completed applications must be submitted to the scholarship chairman, exalted ruler or secretary of the Elks' lodge in the jurisdiction of the applicant's residence. Male and female students will be judged separately. Applicants will be judged on financial need, leadership and scholarship. The top female and male students will receive scholarships of $7500 a year for four years; 2nd place will receive $4000 a year for four years; and third place students will receive $3000 a year for four years.
