Talk about the University of Hawai'i football coach becoming the state's next governor is no longer talk. It's a T-shirt.

Two of June Jones' biggest fans, graphic designer Cyd Shizuru and her husband writer David Choo, came up with mock campaign shirts that feature the words "June Jones for Governor" on the front, and "He's Not Just a Passing Fancy" on the back to give to friends and family. They had no idea there would be commercial demand for the shirts.

"Like everyone else, we got caught in all the excitement in town," she said, adding that the project started as a joke.

The first printing of 60 shirts coincided with the Rainbows Tulsa road game and were gone in no time. The couple printed a hundred more, and those were also snapped up, some by Choo's former co-workers at Gov. Ben Cayetano's office. The governor himself owns a June Jones shirt.

Jones gave the project his blessing and Shizuru said she delivered 10 shirts to him and his staff, but to date, she has not seen any of them wearing it.

"My guess is that he's too modest."

That's just one of the qualities that she believes would make him an excellent governor.

"He's honest. People can believe in him. He's just a winning guy," she said.

Sales are really beginning to take off now that the $15.95 shirts are being sold at Novel-T World in the Ward Warehouse. Call (808) 596-8057.

But for a while, Shizuru said, it was fun to look around Aloha Stadium during games and spot big groups of friends wearing the dark green T-shirts. "We sit in the yellow top row and we could look out and see the shirts. We kind of knew everyone who bought them, so we could say, 'There's auntie, Gracie, Uncle Les in the rust in the end zone.' "
