Wahine escape with close win
By Al Chase
Star-BulletinFortunately for the Hawaii Wahine, they played defense in their season opener against Tennessee Tech.
It was also fortunate they found someone to put the ball in the bucket with 13 seconds left.
Hawaii did shoot well from the free-throw line.
Karena Greeny's left-handed scoop shot put Hawaii ahead, 49-48 with 13 seconds remaining in the game.
Kylie Galloway then sank two free throws with three seconds left to provide the Wahine with just enough margin for a 51-49 victory in the second game of the Hawaiian Regent Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center last night.
No. 25 Arizona pulled away early in the second half to defeat Oklahoma, 75-59, in the opener.
Hawaii trailed by six points (25-19) at the half. It could have been much worse without a solid defensive effort.
The Wahine shot a miserable .207 (6-for-29) from the floor including .100 (1-for-10) from behind the arc in the first half.
"I don't think we took many bad shots," UH head coach Vince Goo said. "They ran a good zone defense and had us stepping a little quick out there.
"The second half we said lets go inside because we couldn't hit anything from the perimeter. We were lucky to draw some fouls."
Janet Holt, who led the Golden Eaglettes with 20 points, hit a jumper to give Tech a 48-47 lead.
On the ensuing UH possession, the Wahine ran a motion play with a succession of players cutting down the lane. Galloway finally hit Greeny cutting from right to left."
"When I got the ball I saw there were five seconds left on the shot clock," Greeny said. "I had no hesitation, surprisingly."
She drove the lane with little opposition and scored.
Raylene Howard led UH with 16 points. Hedy Liu had a double double (12 points, 10 rebounds).
