Bartels shreds ’em at
the Hawaiian Pro

Hawaii's Melanie Bartels advanced yesterday to the quarterfinals
of the G-Shock Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa's Alii Beach Park. Other
Hawaii surfers advancing in the women's competition were
Megan Abubo, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly.



Abubo shines in surf meet

Haleiwa's Megan Abubo and local rookie Melanie Bartels advanced to the quarterfinals of the G-Shock Hawaiian Pro surf meet at Haleiwa's Ali'i Beach Park yesterday in 6- to 8-foot waves.

Defending Hawaiian Pro champion Tita Tavares of Brazil and defending Triple Crown champion Layne Beachley of Australia also advanced. Other locals to move on were Keala Kennelly and Rochelle Ballard.

The Hawaiian Pro is the first event of the men's Vans G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing and the second for the women.
