at Kyushu sumoFUKUOKA -- Komusubi Tosanoumi did his best "Terminator" impression Friday as he crumpled top-ranked maegashira Miyabiyama into a heap to maintain a two-way share of the lead at 6-0 with rank-and-filer Toki at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.
Meanwhile, yokozuna Musashimaru chalked up a meat-and-potatoes win against No. 3 maegashira Asanosho (1-5) at Fukuoka Kokusai Center to join ozeki Dejima, sekiwake Tochiazuma and 13th-ranked Ohinode on 5-1 in the 15-day meet.
Tosanoumi got off an explosive charge against Miyabiyama (1-5) and showed excellent lower-body technique and strength as he bulldozed his 177-kilogram opponent backwards and up against the straw bales before mashing him into the ringside cushions.
No. 5 maegashira Toki, famous for his bushy "Elvis Presley" sideburns, had Minatofuji (3-3) twisting in circles as he maneuvered his seventh-ranked opponent out from behind to extend his 100% record.
Tochiazuma upset yokozuna Takanohana (4-2) in the day's final bout by keeping low and refusing to let the grand champion get his favored right-hand inside grip on the belt.
Takanohana, a winner of 20 Emperor's Cups, was unable to get his feet set and was quickly scrambled out and off the raised ring.
Crowd favorite Terao, fighting as a No. 4 maegashira, also pulled off a shock victory, defeating ozeki Takanonami (4-2) for the first time in four years to boost his record to 2-4.
Dejima showed sekiwake Kaio just what it takes to be an ozeki as he bundled the Tomozuna stable wrestler out to his fourth loss, while Chiyotaikai - another ozeki - toppled defending Kyushu champion Kotonishiki (2-4) to improve to 4-2.
Chiyotaikai pinged Kotonishiki around the ring like a rubber ball in an up-tempo bout, but the No. 2 maegashira kept coming back for more punishment - until Chiyotaikai cleverly slipped to the side and let his opponent's forward motion carry him out.
Top-ranked maegashira Tamakasuga pulled out a Hail-Mary win at the edge over komusubi Musoyama (3-3) to improve to 2-4, while Mongolian trickster Kyokushuzan, a No. 3 maegashira, twisted out komusubi Akinoshima (2-4) to notch his first win of the tourney.
No. 8 maegashira Kyokutenho made it a Mongolian double with an easy win over sixth-ranked Wakanoyama, leaving both men at 2-4.
