Wahine fall in
soccer semis
They lose to 19th-ranked
SMU in triple OTTwo named to All-WAC
Star-Bulletin staffThe Hawaii women's soccer team battled host and 19th-ranked Southern Methodist for more than two hours last night before losing, 2-1, in triple overtime.
The Lady Mustangs ended the Western Athletic Conference tournament semifinal-round match at Dallas on Sarah Harvey's goal at 122:09. The sophomore midfielder headed the game-winner into the lower left corner of the net off a cross from Laura Snyder.
Southern Methodist plays Fresno State, a 1-0 winner over San Jose State, for the conference title tomorrow.
"The kids stayed together, stayed positive. Their attempt was heroic," Hawaii head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
"We did everything correctly. We had three really good looks at the goal and any one of them could have won the game. It wasn't to be and it wasn't for a lack of trying.
"They're already started talking about next season. I'm really proud of our players."
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Mustangs took a 1-0 lead at 53:57 when Nicole Lamb scored with an assist from Shelby Stone.
The Wahine took less than three minutes to draw even. Junior midfielder Megan Lytle fed a ball to striker K.C. Cornett. The 5-2 freshman wheeled, split two defenders and beat goalkeeper Becca Lief with a right-footed shot inside the left post.
It was the first time in five matches SMU (14-5-1) had allowed a goal.
The Lady Mustangs outshot the Wahine, 26-7, but were thwarted time after time by UH goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez, who made 13 saves. She had at least eight diving stops in dangerous situations, including four in overtime.
"It's rare when kids say there is nothing to be ashamed of and mean it," Tenzing said. "Tonight, there was nothing to be ashamed of."
"Malia (Beter) played an incredible game. She marked (Tara Comfort, the Lady Mustangs' leading scorer) right out of the game. Demarre had a wonderful game. Mel (Hurley) played such a fantastic game."
Lytle's assist was the 10th of her career, tying her with Wendy Miyashiro and Nikki Arakawa for the all-time lead in that category.
Hawaii finished its winningest season ever with a 12-7-1 record.

All-WAC
Star-BulletinHawaii striker Veronica Flores and goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez were named to the All-Western Athletic Conference women's soccer first team yesterday.
Midfielder Wendy Miyashiro was named to the second team.
Laura Snyder of Southern Methodist was named Player of the Year, teammate Diana Kelm was named freshman of the year and Fresno State's Peter Reynaud was named Coach of the Year.
This is the first time the Wahine have had two players selected to the first team.
Flores, a sophomore, led the Wahine in scoring with 10 goals and three assists (23 points) during the regular-season.
Sanchez, a junior, is on a pace to set a single season record for lowest goals allowed average (0.93 entering yesterday's match).
Miyashiro, a senior, is the constantly-in-motion heart and soul of the Hawaii midfield.
