Kaimuki Bulldogs in
the OIA playoffs
Special to the Star-BulletinThe Kaimuki Bulldogs were fenced-in by the Farrington Governors' defense last night.
Agatupu Sagapolutele led Farrington to a 28-7 victory over White Division champion Kaimuki in the quarterfinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs at Aloha Stadium before a crowd of 4,425.
Sagapolutele, the Govs' 5-foot-10, 220 pound defensive lineman, created havoc for Kaimuki's quarterbacks. Just ask Jordan Caires, who was was sidelined with a mild concussion early in the first quarter after being slammed to the ground by Sagapolutele, who finished with three sacks.
"We just played a little better defense in the last few weeks and now we are hopefully picking it up for the playoffs," Farrington coach Harold Tanaka said.
Penalties and turnovers caused the Bulldogs to miss on some early scoring opportunities. They were held scoreless in the first three quarters before running back Ryan Root scored on a 5-yard touchdown run late in the game.

The Bulldogs finished with 222 yards of total offense, but only 51 in the second half.
The Governors were led offensively by Kenneth Gasilos. The 6-foot, 160-pound wide receiver had a pair of touchdowns, including a 51-yard scamper on a reverse in the first quarter. Running backs Tuaila Onosai, Micheal Rabago and Monty Kuresa controlled the running game, combining for 127 yards on 25 carries.
The Governors finished with 477 yards of total offense, with 371 yards on the ground."(Farrington) just outplayed us tonight on both sides of the ball," Kaimuki coach Ronald Oyama said. "We didn't execute well on defense and we really didn't tackle well."
Farrington will go on to face top-seeded Kahuku in the semifinals on Nov. 4.
"Kahuku is awesome," Tanaka said. "Defensively, I hope we can carry it on next week because we are going to need it against them."
Farrington and Kahuku have secured berths in the first state football tournament scheduled for Nov. 19 to Dec. 4.
"We are going to need to catch up on some things and make some improvements," Tanaka said. "I think if we don't make some mistakes and turn the ball over, we might be able to stay in the game against Kahuku."
