UH-Manoa makes grade
Star-Bulletin staffThe University of Hawaii gets high marks in "America's 100 Best College Buys 1999."
A series of problems has beset UH-Manoa this year, but the book found plenty of good.
"The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a public research university with an outstanding academic reputation," the book says. "While many colleges and universities talk about returning to the basics, UH at Manoa never left them."
It goes on to say that every undergraduate is required to study world civilizations, complete a two-year foreign language requirement and master a number of writing-intensive courses.
UH offers unique, less generally available courses relating to Asia and the Pacific, marine sciences, international business, foreign languages, geosciences and tropical agriculture, the book says. UH is one of only two schools listed in "America's 100 Best College Buys 1999" that offer Korean. The only other is Brigham Young at Provo, Utah.
UH academic excellence is enhanced by its location in Honolulu, the book says.
"By attending the university, you will not only benefit from exceptionally qualified faculty who are experts in their fields, you can also enjoy unparalleled recreational opportunities and mix with students from across the nation and around the world as you mountain hike, swim, surf, dive, sail and pursue virtually unlimited leisure activities available to the Manoa student. And, you can do all these things year-round!"
