Hawaii surfers fare
well in Australia

Hawaii surfers are doing fairly well in the Oxbow World Longboard Championship at One Mile Beach on Australia's East Coast.

In yesterday's two trial rounds, Hawaii's three-time world champion Rusty Keaulana came in second in his heat to earn a place in the next round. Hawaii's Kapono Nahina finished ahead of Keaulana.

Hawaii's Tellus Fix, Bonga Perkins, Kanoa Dahlin, Lance Hookano and Duane Desoto have survived to surf in today's round three.

But Hawaii's Sion Milosky was surprisingly eliminated, his campaign over much earlier than expected, losing in the second round.

Other disappointed Hawaii surfers: Lee James Ha'o was eliminated in the third round after a pair of second-place finishes, Keola Rapoza was eliminated in the second round after a second-place finish and Kekoa Uemura was eliminated in the third round.

Californian Joel Tudor won his second-round heat, beating former champ Marty MacMillan, who came in second and will be competing today.

Brazilian Alex Salazar, who has qualified for three finals in the past, didn't make the cut.

Naish kitesurfing champ

Oahu's Robby Naish, 36, used his 23 years of professional windsurfing experience to win the Red Bull King of the Air kitesurfing championship yesterday.

The victory, which netted Naish $4,000, took place on Hookipa Beach, Maui.

Kitesurfing, a new extreme sport, uses a 100-foot line tethered to a 15-foot traction kite to propel participants through the water. The sport borrows many elements from wakeboarding, surfing, handgliding and windsurfing.

Sixty-four water sports athletes competed in the inaugural event.

HPU alum wins MPRRC

Former Hawaii Pacific star runner Sylvia Fisher Sanchez finished first in the women's division of the Mid Pacific Road Runners Club yesterday at Kapiolani Park.

Fisher Sanchez, 40, ran the 30-kilometer race in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 7 seconds, 50 seconds ahead of second-place Heather Jorries, 30.

In the men's division, Clint Sheeley, 33, finished first by over three minutes.

Local resident wins medals

Bob Voege, of Hawaii Kai, is bringing home five medals from the Huntsman World Senior Games, which ended Saturday in St. George, Utah.

Competing in the 70-74 age bracket, Voege won a silver medal in the discus and bronze medals in the shotput, high jump, triple jump and long jump.

He also finished fifth in the 50-meter sprint.
