Ed Wong, Elsie Ogata and her sister, Masako, have a good time
discussing the best ways to grow the orchids they had just bought
at yesterday's Honolulu Orchid Society show at the Neal Blaisdell
Exhibition Hall. Wong said he has been a member of the society
for more than 50 years and was its first chairman. Below, 10-year-old
Erin Awa smells a rare and endangered Hawaiian gardenia, "Gardenia
brighamii," that was at Dennis Kim's Native Plant Source booth at the
show. Kim said only about 10 plant populations are known to exist.
All are found in the Waianae Mountains.
