ACADEMIC HONORS

Bullet Arthur L. Mori, faculty retention manager of Chaminade University of Honolulu, has been recognized by the National Resource Center of the University of South Carolina as an outstanding first-year student advocate.

Bullet Michelle Sauque of Laie, who attends Kahuku Intermediate School, was among 51 students who attended the 11th annual RespecTeen National Youth Forum. She was chosen from 11,000 applicants nationwide who wrote letters expressing views on a variety of public policy issues to their congressional representatives.

Environmental Excellence finalists from Molokai won
$10,000 and spent Earth Day in Tampa with animal
expert Jack Hanna and a few exotic friends.



Bullet Students from Kualapuu School in Molokai were finalists in the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Contest. They spent Earth Day at the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay theme park meeting exotic animals and won $10,000 in addition to the trip.

They are Amber Apostol, Crystal Yuen, Alyse Koahanui, Tristan Kiyan, and Dara Lukonen.

Antonia Luisa Houfek, fiber artist and a University of Hawaii-Manoa art student, has received the $500 Elsa Takesue Memorial Scholarship from Fibers Hui of Hawaii.

The Society of Professional Journalists awarded Harmony Tunnicliff of Radford High $100 for her essay on "What A Free Press Means to America." Second place winner was Waimea High senior Jaysen Garcia of Kekaha, Kauai, and third place, Alaura Pang of Kaneohe, a senior at Sacred Hearts Academy.

Bullet Evan Corpuz of Honolulu has received two scholarships to attend Valparaiso University, where he is majoring in mechanical engineering. He has received the Diversity Award, a grant made to minority students, and the Lutheran High School Award, which is given to superior graduates of the schools.

Bullet Winners of Hawaii State History Day, a program of the Hawaii Committee for the Humanities, has awarded its fourth annual outstanding teachers honors to Peter Wagner of Waiakea Intermediate School and Claire McCaffery Griffin of Sacred Hearts Academy.

Other History Day awards were given to the following:

Hawaii Pacific University, $2,500 scholarships to Rosa Masler, Maui High, Le'a Minton, Sarah Lautaha, Kaitlin Palmer, Kahuku;

Brigham Young University, Hawaii Campus, partial scholarships to Darren Salomons, Auguste Toluta'u, Kahuku;

Chaminade University, $5,600 scholarship to Tessa Munekiyo, Baldwin.

Bullet First place winners of the 1999 Board of Water Supply's Water Conservation Week Poster Contest received $100 U.S. Savings Bonds, among other honors. They were Kody Saito of Wailupe Valley Elementary School; Mei Kaminaga, Mililani Mauka Elementary; Tamiko Hobbs, Maemae Elementary; Kaniu Eckart, Lehua Elementary.

Bullet The Filipino Chamber of Commerce awarded nearly $18,000 in scholarships to 17 high school graduates from its annual golf tournaments fundraiser. They were Brandon Viloria of Maui High; Nathan Chi-Hwa, Kalani; Marween Yagin, Baldwin; Jocelyn del Rosario, Waipahu; Nicole Gima, Lanai; Jessica Brown, Kohala; Allyson Lohr, Mililani; Kalona Rego, Kauai; Sal Saribay, Jr., Lahainaluna; Bert Uyenco, Maryknoll; Margie Ramos, Darling Dumlao, Eilene Orsino, Alexander Failano, Campbell; Jason Antolin, Isa Lorei Seminuk, Farrington.

Bullet Winners of the 1999 Nene Award essay contest, sponsored by the Hawaii Library Association and Hawaii Association of School Librarians, include Peter Chun of Moanalua Elementary School; Seth Levy, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School; and Linnea Ihilani Heu of Ele'ele Elementary. Poster contest winners are Case Jenkins of Aikahi; Tia Jay of Wailupe Valley; and Anna Lasquete of Barber's Point.

Bullet State Science and Engineering Fair awards went to Senior Research Division winners, from first to third place: Kapua Medeiros, Kamehameha; Lizhou Wang, Iolani; Walter Coronel, Chris Ross, Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

Elisa Nishimoto, St. Joseph; Brian Nishiguchi, Kauai; and Cindy Richardson, Kamehameha, won honorable mentions.

In the Junior Research Division, winners were Lovey Walker, Benjamin Parker Elementary; Blake Kurisu, Mari Ono, Waiakea Intermediate; Jenna Yoshimura, St. Andrews Priory.

Receiving honorable mentions were Jason Baum, Maui Waena; Michelle Tsang, Waiakea; and Douglas Kim, Iao.

Junior Display Division winners included Matthew Cardoza, St. Louis; Tracie-Lee Akiona, St. Ann; Matt Dorsey, St. John Vianney.

Honorable mention winners were Jeffrey J. Schulte, Jr. , Trinity Lutheran; Christopher Fong, Iolani; and Melanie Bomke, Iolani.

GRANTS AND DONATIONS

Bullet The Catholic Charities Family services program, Ka Malama Punua, has received $25,000 from the Hawaii Community Foundation to continue providing services to 30 to 45 Oahu north shore families who have children under five years old at risk of abuse or neglect.

Bullet Canon USA Inc., Hawaii Branch has given $7,812 to the Pacific chapter of the March of Dimes, representing donations raised by Canon participants in the WalkAmerica fundraiser and matching contributions by the company. Canon had previously donated $10,000 for the fund .

Bullet KRTR Radio has donated $17,726 to Royal Elementary School, one of the winners of the Krater 96 Computers for Kids Program.

Bullet Alexander & Baldwin Foundation has granted $5,000 to the YMCA of Honolulu-Leeward Branch to help students from Waipahu High and Intermediate School attend a Youth in Government program.

Bullet The Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation has awarded $10,000 to the Institute of Human Services, Inc. for the hiring of a specialist to provide childcare and parent education for families in the IHS homeless shelter.

Bullet Goodwill Industries of Hawaii has received a grant of $5,000 from the James and Juanita Wo Foundation. The funds will be used to provide programs and services to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

Bullet Gentry Homes, Ltd. has donated $50,000 to the Ewa Beach Community Fund, bringing its total contribution to $250,000 since 1995.

Bullet The Mental Health Association in Hawaii has received contributions and grants of $294 from the Interline Hui O Hawaii Club; $1,000 from the Hawaii Medical Services Association; $1,000 from Janssen Parmaceutica; $1,500 from the Eli Lilly & Company; and $2,500 from the Barbara Cox Anthony Foundation.

American Savings Bank has donated two condominium units on Oahu's north shore to the Angel Network Charities, a privat e, non-profit organization that supports the homeless.

Bullet The Adult Friends for Youth Student Transition Convention, which helped the Hawaii Department of Education transition 13,500 students from elementary to middle schools throughout the state were assisted by sponsorship grants totalling $48,000 from AES Hawaii, Hawaii Management Alliance Association, Lions Club of Honolulu, American Savings Bank, Insurance Associates, KTA Super Stores, Maui Electric Company, the Alexander & BaldwinFoundation, Kaiser Permanente, and the Hawaii Hotel Industries Foundation.

Bullet Ronald McDonald House Charities donated $5,000 to the Youth Gang Therapeutic Intervention Program.

Bullet The Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation has donated $10,000 to aid in the youth and adult camping grounds at the Hauula Outdoor Ministries Experience, Lani Kamaha'o, Inc.

Bullet The Hawaiian Humane Society has received seven grants, from: the Bernice Barbour Foundation, $10,000; the Kaulunani Urban Forest ry Grant Program, $10,000; the North Shore Animal League, $10,000; the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation, $5,000; the Ellen M. Koenig Memorial Fund, $5,000; the Hawaii Hotel Industry Foundation, $5,000; the Sophie Russell Testamentary Trust, $10,000; and the G.N. Wilcox Trust, $5,000.

Bullet The Navy Public Works Center at Pearl Harbor donated 40 personal computers and 12 printers to Farrington High School to replace those lost in a fire that destroyed the school's computer room. The new computers will be used in a lab created for special education students.

Bullet The Hawaii Committee for the Humanities has awarded 10 grants totaling $36,783 to these non-profit organizations: Pacific Resources for Education and Learning, $8,833; Hilo Community Players, $2,500; Maui's Sons and Daughters of the Nisei Veterans, $4,950; University of Hawaii Center for Oral History, $5,000; Bernice P. Bishop Museum, $5,000; Hawaii Tai Chi Chuan Association, $2,500; Hawaii Writing Project, $2.500; Akaku: Maui Community Television, $2,500; Pamela Frierson, $1,500; Rona Tamiko Halualani, $1,500.

Bullet The Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation has given the St. John Vianney Parish School a $20,000 grant to improve its school library.

Bullet Hawaiian Electric Company has donated $4,000 to the Hawaiian Railway Society for 240 wooden crossties to help upgrade the historic 15-mile railroad track from Ewa to Nanakuli.

SCHOLASTIC HONORS

Bullet Winners of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, a federally-funded national program, have been awarded $1,500 for the first year of college study.

From the First Congressional District, recipients included Erica T. Chiu, Paul A. Harada, Meredith R. Ishida, Melissa S. Mun, Erin N. Nishimura, of Punahou; Lehua B. Choy of Roosevelt; Laura M.Damerville, Tanner T. Fahl, Jolene S. Muueno, Karen M. Takishita, Kawika A. Uechi of Iolani; Serina M. Diniega,of Pearl City; and Keane T. Nishimoto, Michael A.M. Tamamoto of Mililani.

Winners from the Second Congressional District were Lauren M. Akitake, Emi M. Eno, Jill N. Yoshizawa of Baldwin; Orion K. Crisafulli of Punahou; Daniel W. Evans of Kahuku; Emilie S. Fagin of Radford; Peter H. Fukunaga of St. Anthony; Pueo G. Keffer of Konawaena; Naomi L.Klein, Megan C. Lloyd, Nicole I. Smith, Nina O. Yuen of Hilo; Reid I. Maeda of Iolani; Kristopher K. Tesoro of Maui.

Bullet Renee Martin of the Kamehameha Schools and Wanda Nishihara of Wailupe Valley Elementary School have been named Secondary and Elementary Economics Teachers of the Year, respectively, by the Hawaii Pacific University. They were awarded $1,000.

Bullet Serina M. Diniega of Pearl City High School won the $6,000 Girl Scout Gold Award scholarship from the Elks National Foundation, one of just eight nationwide to receive the award.

Bullet Yong S. Chu of Honolulu has received a $2,250 scholarship to attend Graceland College in Iowa.

Bullet Lokelani Aipa and Lesly Keolanui Awang of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Hilo, respectively, have won National Science Foundation Scholarships for Archaeological Training for Native Americans and Hawaiians.

Lisa Kanae received the $1,000 first prize in the Patsy Sumie Saiki fiction national award program, sponsored by the University of Hawaii's creative writing program in association with Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing. Ryan Senaga was awarded second prize of $250.

Other UH students who won honors include Rosa Flores, who received the William H. and Stephen C. Stryker prize and the Hemingway award, along with Tia Ballantine Berger. They Myrtle Clark award winners were Wendy Miyaki, Irene Cadelina, Kristin Kelley Lau, Allison Ikeda, Maile Gresham, and Cherie Chun.

Hawaii winners in the national ThinkQuest Junior Program captured 20% of the awards for creating educational websites on the Internet for students and teachers. Platinum or first place winners received $1,500 per student, $3,000 per teacher coach, and $1,000 per school. For the interdisciplinary category, t hey include Jenna Akasaki, Mallorie Hepa, King Kaumualii Elementary; Aric Banuilos, Aiea; Sean Galera, Cherie Yamashiroya, Moanalua; Mari Maeda, Waimalu; teacher coaches Lynne Sueoka, Jeff Chan, Aiea.

Larry N. Osborne, associate professor in the Library and Information Science Program, Department of Information and Computer Science, has received the Armed Forces Libraries Round Table certificate of merit for his consultative support.
