Hawaii head coach Pinsoom Tenzing has waited all season for the Wahine to exhibit the same brand of soccer at home they display in practice and on the road.

Yesterday wasn't the day.

"This was as bad as we can play, as bad as it gets," Tenzing said.

The Wahine won despite showing almost none of the finesse demanded by their game plan.

Veronica Flores scored in the first half and the Wahine managed to make the goal stand up for a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at the UH Soccer Field.

Melissa McCormick, a 5-foot-7 striker, had a header go off the cross bar in the eighth minute, then UH goalie Demarre Sanchez fisted another McCormick header over the bar in the ninth minute.

In neither case was McCormick closely marked.

Wanette Miyashiro's corner kick from the left side initiated the sequence that led to the UH goal.

The ball pinballed between several Tulsa defenders before landing at Camille Kalama's feet.

She crossed on the ground to the right side where Flores was waiting six yards out. The sophomore striker one-timed the ball for her eighth goal of the season at the 17 minute, five second mark.

Tulsa's Megan Misner unloaded from 20 yards out two minutes later and Sanchez was forced to punch another shot over the bar.

The Golden Hurricane thought they had tied the score when the ball rolled into the net after Sanchez had pulled down a corner kick, but the referee ruled a Tulsa player had knocked it out of the UH goalkeeper's hands.

Early in the second half, Tulsa had a direct free kick just outside the penalty box, but Julie Davidson's shot was wide.

At 22:58 of the second half, UH's Kammie Aguada was hauled down from behind by Molly Adams.

Unfortunately for the Wahine, Aguada retaliated and hit Adams, who received a yellow card.

Aguada was red carded (ejected) and must sit out tomorrow's match against Texas-El Paso.

"I shouldn't have done it, It was a stupid mistake. I only hurt the team," Aguada said.

Playing a player short for 22 minutes only magnified the Wahine inability to generate an offense.

"It hurts our game. Under pressure, we play kick ball," said Sanchez, who had 11 saves, including denying Julie Twellman one-on-one with 13 minutes left.

It was Sanchez's third complete-match shutout of the season, tying the UH record set by Amanda Paterson in 1996 and 1998.

Wahine Playbook

vs. Texas -El Paso Miners

Bullet Coaches: Texas-El Paso,, Veronica O'Brien, 4th season (26-28-4, .483). Hawaii, Pinsoom Tenzing, 6th season (38-57-6, .406).

Bullet Season: UTEP (7-6-1 overall, 1-2-0 Western Athletic Conference). UH, (8-5-1,2-1-0)

Bullet Series record: This is the first meeting between the schools.

Bullet Top players: UTEP, senior goalkeeper Amanda Smith has five shutouts, a WAC-leading 84 saves and allows 1.12 goals per match. Sophomore striker Kim Roberts is the Miners leading goal scorer with six. Sophomore midfielder Laura Glasspoole leads the WAC with eight assists. Freshman defender Katherine McShane and Roberts each have four assists. UH, senior midfielder Wendy Miyashiro who plays hard every second she is on the field.

Bullet Interesting facts: The Miners have eight Canadian players on their roster. UTEP head coach Veronica O'Brien was a member of the Canadian National Team for 10 years and played college ball at the University of New Hampshire. She started the UTEP program and last year, its third, the Miners tied for first place in the Mountain Division. The Wahine have been credited with 16 assists this season, but six players - Veronica Flores, Dawn Dasher, K.C. Cornett, Wendy Miyashiro, Liane Watanabe and Camille Kalama - are tied for the team lead with two apiece.

Bullet Match keys: The Wahine will be without Kammie Aguada, sitting for one match because of a red card received against Tulsa. Filling Aguada's role of distributing the ball offensively will be crucial. The UH offense was poor at best against Tulsa. For whatever reason, playing matches on the same field they practice on, playing in the late afternoon, not enjoying the friendly confines of Ala Wai Field, the Wahine have not play their best soccer on campus to date. The Miners have lost two consecutive league matches and dearly need a victory to stay in the hunt for a WAC tournament berth. The is the final conference home match for UH. It's a must win for the Wahine.

Bullet Kickoff: Tomorrow, 4 p.m., UH Soccer Field.

Bullet On the air: Live on KFVE.

Bullet Tickets: Free admission. $3 parking charge.
