Kennelly ousts Menczer
Hawaii's Keala Kennelly, a replacement for one of the absent seeded surfers, eliminated defending women's champion Pauline Menczer of Australia yesterday in the second round of the Brazilian Rio Marathon Surf International meet at Barra Beach, Brazil.Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii also advanced to the third round.
Hawaii's Sunny Garcia, Conan Hayes, Ross Williams and Shawn Sutton won their loser-out heats, as did current ASP Tour leader Mark Ochillupo of Australia.
Shane Dorian and Kalani Robb of Hawaii were eliminated.
Chang national finalist
Quarterback Timmy Chang of unbeaten St. Louis School was named a finalist yesterday for the Dick Butkus Football Network's national high school player of the year award.Chang was one of five quarterbacks among the finalists for the C. David Baker Award, named after the commissioner of the Arena Football League. The winner will be announced on Dec. 10.
Moynahan leads isle golfers
Brendan Moynahan of Koele shot a par 71, four shots off the pace, in yesterday's opening round of the Western PGA Club Professional Golf Championship at Bernalillo, N.M.Larry Webb of Littleton, Colo., led the way with a 67.
Vulcans snap out of it
The Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team, triggered by April Pana's 16 kills, rallied past visiting Western Washington in five games last night to end an eight-match losing streak.The 15-12, 14-16, 9-15, 15-8, 15-7 victory gave the Vulcans a 3-8 season record and was their first in five Pacific West Conference matches. Western Washington is 6-9 and 3-6.
Seasiders given the boot
Simon Fraser scored four second-half goals in a 6-0 men's soccer victory over BYU-Hawaii yesterday at Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
