Unruly man rushed
to HPD station

Question: About 5:45 p.m., Sept. 23, two police cars with lights flashing and sirens on came down Ward Avenue, crossed Beretania and turned into Young Street. One was a blue-and-white and the other was an unmarked personal vehicle. Since they appeared to be going to police headquarters, why was it necessary to use their lights and sirens? I thought police officers were supposed to use the lights and sirens only in case of an emergency. What emergency would require a response by patrol officers at police headquarters?

Answer: The blue-and-white vehicle was transporting a disorderly person to the Honolulu Police Department and the unmarked vehicle was escorting it as backup, said HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu.

They were rushing to process the man being escorted because he was in danger of injuring himself in the back seat of the vehicle, Yu said.

Q: What is the parking rate at Honolulu Airport? I know it's posted where you make your payment at the exit, but before one can read it completely, we must leave because of people waiting behind us. Do they issue receipts upon request? Also, who do we call for overcharges?

A: AMPCO System Parking operates the parking lot at Honolulu Airport and charges $1 for the first half hour and $1 for each additional hour or fraction of an hour, up to a maximum $10. Any vehicle left over 8 hours, up to 24 hours, is charged $10.

Receipts are given upon request. To dispute a charge or if you have any questions, call 861-1260.

Musashimaru's address

In Thursday's column a reader asked for the addresses of Hawaii-born sumotori Akebono and Musashimaru. We were able to find Akebono's address but asked if anyone had one for Musashimaru. A sumo fan came through: Write to Musashimaru, c/o Musashigawa Baya, 4-27-1 Higashi Nippori, Arakawa-ku, Tokyo 116 Japan.

Mahalo

To Clyde Marugame of Manoa Chevron Service for rescuing one stressed-out wahine! My van overheated and I didn't know what to do. Mr. Marugame tried to figure out what was wrong but decided it was best to have it towed and serviced by the dealership. He let me use his phone and wait in his office for the tow truck. Mahalo also to Shane for helping me carry my "stuffs" out of the van. -- D. Tanaka

Auwe

To the city for allowing police officers to work off-duty for private employers while retaining the authority of a police officer, i.e., being able to stop traffic for a construction project. The officer is being paid by the construction company, so it's not a big concern that he's blocking cars and backing up traffic for 10 minutes to allow construction work to get done. Wearing two hats at the same time is a conflict of interest. If they're public servants, they should serve the public; if they're working for a private employer, they should not have the authority of a police officer. -- M.

Mahalo

To the nurse and physical therapist who rendered first aid when I was in a car accident at the airport post office on Friday, Aug. 20, and to the young man who acted quickly to save my leg from severe injuries by pushing the car away when I became pinned. Thank God for always watching over me and for sending these brave and kind young people as his good Samaritans. -- Jean
