Poster images are
an indelible part
of pop history

Posters are signs of the times.

Through design, color, type style and images, they reflect cultures, sell products and communicate ideologies and ideas on a single sheet of heavy stock.

A collection of 100 such posters is on exhibit at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Art Gallery through Oct. 29. The posters feature various styles by leading designers in Europe and the United States, post-World War II.

In the exhibit are a psychedelic 1967 Hawaii Pop Rock Festival poster, an image of Bob Dylan by Milton Glaser that became an emblem of America in the 1960s, and a clever 1966 ad for Chat Noir (Black Cat) coffee that without one word conveys the name brand, product and the satisfaction of a brewing pot of coffee.

The gallery is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays (closed Saturdays). Admission is free.

Information: 956-6888.

Mo bang for the buck

Purchasers of the Super Saver Weekend Value Pass for the 1999 JN Chevrolet Hydrofest Saturday and Sunday will get a fringe benefit courtesy of the USS Missouri Memorial Association.

The $15 pass, which is available at KFC Restaurants and military ticket offices, will entitle the bearer to 50 percent off admission to the Mighty Mo through October. Regular admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children.

The 887-foot USS Missouri served in World War II, the Korean War and the Persian Gulf War. It has been turned into a museum and given a home on Pearl Harbor's Battleship Row. It's attractions include the surrender deck, site of the formal end to WWII; the largest guns ever made by the U.S. Navy; and restored officers' quarters.

The Hydrofest features a 2.5 mile boat race off Ford Island with average speeds of more than 160 miles per hour. Other events include a carnival midway, live entertainment and displays of military hardware. Information: 473-2434.
