Seasiders avenge early loss
The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's soccer team defeated Hawaii Pacific, 2-1, Saturday in double overtime. The win avenged a 4-0 loss Sept. 11 at HPU's Windward campus.
The Seasiders took the lead quickly, scoring their first goal seven minutes into the match as Mat Tanigawa booted the ball into the net off teammate Kevin Petrie's corner kick.
"Our goal coming into this match was to close down the middle of the field," said BYUH head coach Bob Barry. "Because we did this, HPU couldn't push the ball through the middle, and at the same time, we created scoring opportunities for ourselves."
The Sea Warriors scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation, forcing overtime.
But BYUH's Todd Miller headed the ball into the goal off a free kick by Elias Akinaka, to end the game after 123 minutes.
BYUH, which improved to 2-1 overall, leaves for an eight-day trip to the mainland next week to play five teams. HPU dropped to 4-5.
