Gridiron fans love Jones

YOU can already hear the cries: "June Jones for Governor!" After winning four straight games with his hastily assembled crew of recruits added to what was left of last year's hapless 0-12 football team,Mug shot Jones might well be crowned king among gridiron fans. And that's one bandwagon Gov. Ben Cayetano wouldn't mind boarding. Jones is a no-nonsense kind of guy who'd merely shrug off such hyperbole and turn his attention to the next game on his slate, the Rice cooker which will take place Saturday at Aloha Stadium. And to all those flea marketeers who were grousing about loss of sales due to having to close a half-hour early, only five home games remain ...

IT'S little wonder "The Joy Luck Club" was extended at Kumu Kahua Theatre. It's a wonderful production of Susan Kim's play, adapted from Amy Tan's novel and directed by Keiko Ho. The cast, particularly the four mothers and four daughters, was a classic ensemble with nary a weak link. I must, however, confess to a bias on the part of Elissa Dulce, who was the perfect Chinese mother, down to the speech patterns, walk and stance, though she has no Chinese blood of her own. She is, however an accomplished actress, and was outstanding as the bartender in Joe Moore's film, "Goodbye, Paradise." If they extend "Joy Luck Club" further, do yourself a favor and see it ...

Happy you eat Hawaii

ISLANDERS are being urged to "Have a McHappy Day" today. McDonald's restaurants are donating $1 from the sale of every Big Mac Extra Value Meal today to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Last year, that group shelled out more than $150,000 to 130 not-for-profit groups in Hawaii ... People crave different foods. On a recent Maui vacation, John Gengler of Garden Grove, Calif., fell in love with the imu-roasted laulau served up at Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina. When he got home, he was waxing eloquent about the dish when a friend challenged him to get some sent over. He rose to the occasion, called food and beverage manager Judee Mae Akina and suddenly three dozen of the tasty bundles were en route to the mainland ...

SINCE we seem to be concentrating on food today, be aware that they're already gearing up for "Fantasies in Chocolate," a benefit for the Hawaiian Humane Society set for Nov. 7 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. This gives you a month to save up to savor up such chocolate goodies as devised by Ghiradelli, David Paul's Diamond Head Grill, Big Isle Candies, the Doubletree Alana Hotel, Ted's Bakery and Kauai Tropical Fudge, to name but a few. You can get tickets at the Humane Society or by calling 946-2187 ...

PLANNING ahead is one thing, but this is ridiculous: Mark Jensen, exec v.p. of the Hawaii Convention Center Channel (HITV) got his St. Louis Alumni Association card asserting that he is "a member in good standing until June 30, 3000." If you break the charge down on a yearly basis, that's pretty cheap ...

Remember Melva

FRIENDS of the late Melvamay Ho, wife of entertainer Don Ho, will gather in her memory Oct. 24 at Don Ho's Island Grill. Many friends of hers will be entertaining, including Amy Gilliom & Willy K, Melveen Leed, Iva Kinimaka, Dick Jensen, Nephi Hannemann and more. It's 4 to 7:30 p.m. and the $50 admission fee goes to the Arthritis Foundation. Call them at 942-3636 for tickets ...
