The dulcet tones of a saxophone drifted through
downtown Honolulu yesterday as John Ibayan
warmed up at the corner of Pauahi Street and
Nuuanu Avenue. Ibayan is one of the members
of the Salsa Hawaii Band, which provided Latin
rhythms for dancing in the streets in another of
the Nuuanu Nights block parties. The theme last
night was "La Vida Loca," and the event also
included glass-blowing demonstrations, poetry
reading, puppeteers, performance art and -- for
the more physically adventurous -- a Moving
Mountains portable rock-climbing wall. The
Nuuanu District Association for Culture and
the Arts started presenting Nuuanu Nights
celebrations earlier this year.
