Millennium Moments

Millennium special

Black Point

BLACK Point in East Honolulu always has been special, with a storied past spanning from Kamehameha the Great in the late 1700s, to modern-day exclusivity created by the rich elite.

Composed of ocean-swept lava rock, the area in ancient times was called Kupikipikio (Black Point). When Big Island warrior Kamehameha made his push to invade Oahu in 1795, his armada of war canoes was said to have stretched from Kupikipikio to Maunalua Bay in present-day Hawaii Kai.

More than 100 years later, around 1901, one of Black Point's first houses was built by developer Fred Harrison, who had built the Custom House a couple years earlier for $8,791, says "Hawaii: the Electric Century" by Carl Myatt and Deborah Uchida.

The mid-1930s saw a building boom by the wealthy, who turned Black Point into one of the world's most exclusive and expensive communities.

"The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority is on the cutting edge of sustainable energy and ocean-related product development," Inouye said. "I am pleased the Congress shares my enthusiasm for the ground-breaking innovations occurring at Keahole Point and concurs with the need to provide federal resources to help advance the laboratory's efforts."

Woman pleads guilty to bankruptcy fraud

Miyoko Mizuno has pleaded guilty in federal court to bankruptcy fraud.

The U.S. attorney's office said she concealed her life estate interests in a Honolulu condominium and her home during her bankruptcy case.

U.S. Attorney Steven Alm said Mizuno, 52, was attempting to be relieved of about $185,000 in unsecured debt by filing a bankruptcy petition that claimed no interests in any real property.

While she had transferred a condominium and her home to her son, she had retained a life estate interest in both, the U.S. attorney's office said.

Mizuno will be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge David Ezra on Jan. 3, 2000. She faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
