Mayor jokes old hat

SOME friends of Honolulu's First Lady, Ramona Harris, ran into her while coming out of Mariposa in Neiman-MarcusMug shot the other day and complimented her on her straw hat, which went nicely with her Hawaiian outfit and seed lei. Ramona laughed and admitted to having a "bad hair day," which she hoped to rescue with the hat, which was actually her husband's. She added quickly that the hat had an elastic band since her head isn't as big as that of Mayor Harris. I realize this will come as no shock to anyone, but it's nice to hear it from such a good source. As for the Mayor, Ramona dropped that he has trips coming up to Japan and the mainland, and has been invited to speak at the United Nations. That's not likely to decrease his hat size any ...

MOVING over to Liberty House, the venerable store (Chapter 11 or not) is celebrating its 150th anniversary tomorrow and a free concert will take place at Liberty House's Fort Street Mall entrance at noon. Brickwood Galuteria and Frank B. Shaner of KINE Radio will emcee the event and there'll be a mini concert by Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Willie K. Liberty House first opened its doors not far from the scene of tomorrow's birthday party, as a little dry goods store on Queen Street. That was back on Oct. 1, 1849, long before Abraham Lincoln was shot ...

Former Liberty House mates

WHAT with Liberty House celebrating its sesquicentennial, someone came up with a list, partial to be sure, of people who worked at the store before heading out into all walks of life. Former employees include Tesoro Hawaii president Faye Kurren, KGMB's Kim Gennaula, KITV's Paula Akana, KSSK's Dave Lancaster, the Hawaii Tax Foundation's Lowell Kalapa, Sen. Carol Fukunaga, Al Tomonari and Pauline Worsham of Neiman-Marcus, Jack Pomeroy of the Elephant Walk, Hilo Hattie's Dean Iverson, retail consultant Doug Smoyer, UH Wahine volleyball assistant coach Kari Anderson, model and actress Julia Nickson, businessman Duane Kurisu, fund-raiser Claire Johnson, artists Lynn Smith, Juno Galang and Clifford Tanaka, and entertainers Chad Lindsey, Ipolani Vaughn and Leinaala Haili ...

WITH apologies to Dave Letterman, herewith is a Top 10 list of cleverly named hair salons, inspired when I spotted the one deemed the best: No. 10: Barber Zone; No. 9: Headlines Hawaii; No. 8: Cut Loose; No. 7: Head On Salon; No. 6: 2nd Look; No. 5: Hair Port; No. 4: Hair Craft; No. 3: Aloha Hairlines; No. 2: Shear Touch and the No. 1 clever name for a hair salon: The Mane Attraction in Manoa Valley Marketplace ...

How now, Brown frau?

IT turned out to be one of the largest turnouts ever for a Visiting Artist Program on Lanai when Hollywood film producer David Brown and his wife, author/editor Helen Gurley Brown appeared at the Lodge at Koele. Brown, whose previous films include "Jaws," "The Verdict" and "Cocoon," is awaiting release later this year of the film version of Frank McCourt's best-selling Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir "Angela's Ashes," which stars Oscar nominee Emily Watson. Brown's wife, who authored the trend-setting "Sex and the Single Girl," may be petite in stature, but is a giant in publishing. It's ironic that the book that established her dealt with single women, since she and her husband celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Lanai ...
