honors to BownHawaii's Heather Bown has been named the American Volleyball Coaches' Association national player of the week.
The UH middle hitter, a 6-foot-3 senior who led the unbeaten Wahine to victories over Long Beach State and Colorado last week, also took WAC player of the week honors.
Bown had 16 kills, eight blocks and three service aces as UH snapped Long Beach State's 42-match winning streak.
She had 13 more kills in the win over Colorado.
She is the first Wahine to earn the national weekly award since Angelica Ljungquist in 1996.
Few final four volleyball tickets left
Only 55 tickets were left for the Dec. 16 and 18 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship final four at the Stan Sheriff Center as of last night.Only single seats are available. They can be purchased at the Sheriff Center ticket office, the UH Campus Center and Rainbowtique outlets or by phone at 944-BOWS.
Ticket office hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
UH Wahine host cross-country meet
The UH Wahine cross-country team hosts its only home meet of the season - the Hawaii Invitational - Saturday at the Kaneohe Klipper golf course, joining men and women from eight other colleges.The women's 5-kilometer race starts at 7:15 a.m., the men's 5K at 7:45 a.m.
In its first regular-season meet, UH took second place behind a San Jose State team in the University of San Diego Invitational.
Expected to run for the Wahine are Casey McGuire-Turcott, Teryn Bentley, Lisa Davis, Diane Kahara, Jodi Enomoto and Deborah Smuda.
Youth tennis lessons in Kalihi
The Police Activities League will join the USTA/Hawaii Pacific Section in offering tennis lessons to youngsters at the Kalihi Recreation Center courts starting Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 4-6 p.m.The cost of $2 to join the PAL includes a T-shirt. New pro golf tour on four islands
Pro Tour Hawaii and Cosmic Fishing will join next year in conducting the Hawaii Tour, an 11-week international developmental series of events for professional golfers.The Hawaii Tour will run from Jan. 18 to March 31, 2000, with 10 72-hole stroke play tourneys on the islands of Hawaii, Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
Players will pay entry fees of $11,500 and play for weekly purses of $100,000 (based on fields of 130). There also will be bonus prize money.
