Fitzgerald is
first in Kailua
Beach biathlon

Michael Fitzgerald was one of two athletes who finished yesterday's Sand & Surf Biathlon in under an hour, taking first place.

The biathlon, which involved a 1-mile swim and 5-mile run, was at Kailua Beach.

The 41-year-old Fitzgerald finished the event in 54 minutes and 59 seconds. Daniel Chapman, 16, finished in 58 minutes and 24 seconds. Kevin Weng, 52, was third at 1 hour, 52 seconds. All are from Hawaii.

Ashley Swart, 50, and also from Hawaii, was the top women's finisher, at 1 hour, 6 minutes and 46 seconds.

Wright wins by four strokes in Hickam Invitational golf

Former University of Hawaii golfer Van Wright shot a 6-under-par 210 at Mamala Bay Golf Course to win the Hickam Invitational by four shots over Regan Lee yesterday.

Del-Marc Fujita and John Lundgren finished five shots off the pace in the tournament, which started Friday and finished yesterday.

Mike Ukauka rounded off the top five.

Maui kitesurfing competition offers look at extreme sport

The Red Bull King of the Air, a kitesurfing event that will bring together 64 of the world's best water sports athletes, is scheduled for Oct. 18-23 on the north shores of Maui.

Kitesurfing is basically a combination of windsurfing, wakeboarding and kite-flying.

Using traditional surfboards, wakeboards and other devices, kitesurfers can manipulate the wind and waves to launch themselves into the air while holding onto a handle-bar attached to the traction kite. Kitesurfers reportedly are reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and heights of up to 60 feet.

Kailua, Oahu's Robby Naish, one of the world's premier windsurfers with 24 various world titles, will participate.

Military arm-wrestling championships Saturday

Active military personnel are invited to participate in the Hawaii Armed Forces Arm-Wrestling Championships at Club Pearl, Paradise Lounge, Saturday at 5 p.m.

Weigh-ins are at Club Pearl on Friday, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Entry fee is $15.

BYUH kickers win exhibition

Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated an Air Force team yesterday, 2-1, in an exhibition men's soccer match at Laie.

Tyler Todd scored for the Seasiders in the first half on a point-blank shot. BYUH's Ricky Riley would add another score before Air Force booted a late goal.

HPU soccer team wins, too

NCAA Division II men's soccer team Hawaii Pacific shut out NAIA No. 9 Seattle University, 1-0, Saturday at Arcata, Calif.

Cenan Senyuva scored the game-winner in the 65th minute as HPU outshot Seattle, 19-6.

HPU (3-4) will play Sonoma State Tuesday to conclude its five-game road trip. Seattle dropped to 2-4-2.
