Two from Star-Bulletin
to be honored by PAACThe annual council dinner

is scheduled for Oct.12The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council will present Honolulu Star-Bulletin reporter Susan Kreifels a Media Excellence Award for her coverage of Asia-Pacific news.
The council also will honor contributing editor Adam A. "Bud" Smyser with a Lifetime Achievement Award at PAAC's annual dinner meeting Oct. 12 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Kreifels joined the Star-Bulletin in 1996 after assignments in Asia that included five years as Philippines bureau chief and three years as Japan bureau chief of Pacific Stars and Stripes.
She also worked for three years at the Pacific Daily News on Guam.
She studied Asian affairs as a Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center and a Freedom Forum Asia Fellow at the University of Hawaii.
Smyser has been with the Star-Bulletin since 1946 as a reporter and editor.
As an editorial page columnist since 1983, he has written about a range of topics affecting "Hawaii's World" and the Pacific region.
One of his recurring themes is the need to develop Hawaii as a global center for education, culture, diplomacy and business.
He was steering committee chairman for the Governor's Congress on Hawaii's International Role in 1988.
The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council initiated the awards last year to recognize outstanding and meaningful coverage of the Asia-Pacific region.
In addition, the council will honor Floyd Takeuchi, editor and publisher of Hawaii Business Magazine, and Hawaii Public Radio for its Asia Report and Pacific Island News Report.
