Hannemann mulls run
for Congress as a
Republican

WASHINGTON -- And the 2000 Republican candidate for Congress from Hawaii is ... Mufi Hannemann?

The Democratic Honolulu City Councilman, who has long yearned for higher office, has had discussions with Republicans here about switching parties and running against either Rep. Neil Abercrombie or Rep. Patsy Mink.

"There are people mentioning it to me," said Hannemann, who is considering a campaign next year either for Congress or for mayor. "I'm not initiating any talks of switching, but I have talked to congressional leaders about it."

He declined to be more specific about his talks.

Hannemann said he expected to make up his mind which office to seek -- and presumably which political party he will seek it from -- by the end of the year.
