Wahine top Oral Roberts
By Al Chase
Star-BulletinThe Hawaii Wahine may have experienced a breakthrough in the second half of their match against Oral Roberts yesterday at the UH Soccer Field.
Instead of overusing the long ball and playing helter-skelter, the Wahine (3-2-1) found their short passing game and made better use of open space to establish control in a 3-0 win over ORU (3-4).
"We have to get over that initial hump of playing frantic soccer. They don't realize that if they play like that, wins are going to come at a very high cost," Wahine head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
Veronica Flores set up the first goal with a chip from the left side that Camille Kalam headed toward the net. Dawn Dasher redirected the ball slightly, freezing ORU goalkeeper Amanda Loyall.
It was Dasher's first goal this season and UH led 1-0 at halftime.
The Massachusetts connection clicked at the 55-minute mark. Megan Lytle (Sutton) put a ball through to Jennifer Starsiak (Quincy), who beat an ORU defender, then angled a shot inside the far post.
"I saw the open net. I saw the goalie and my aim was to not hit it at her," Starsiak said.
Later, midfielder Liane Watanabe made a 30-yard run and had three strikers available to receive a pass. She put a pretty ball to Malia Beter streaking down the right side. Beter controlled, then beat Loyall with a low shot just inside the near post.
