Star-BulletinChevron Hawaii has agreed to sponsor the inaugural state high school football championship this fall and assume sponsorship of the February's girls' state softball championship in a three-year deal to be announced this afternoon.
The title sponsorship is for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association's football playoff, set for Nov. 19 through Dec. 3. Four first-round games are scheduled to be played at two sites on Oahu and one each on Kauai and Maui.
The semifinals on Nov. 26 and the Dec. 3 final will be played at Aloha Stadium.
The girls' softball tournament is scheduled for Feb. 9-12 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The three-year pact is worth $100,000 a year with a two-year option to renew. Half of the money will go for title sponsorship of the two sports, $25,000 for marketing and television commercials, and $25,000 for education for coaches, trainers and youth clinics.
Keith Amemiya, the HHSAA executive director, declined comment until after this afternoon's press conference.
The Oahu Prep Bowl ended after 26 years last season, when the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu could not agree on eligibility rules.
