Isle firm designs unique Vegas mall
A design by a Honolulu-based architectural firm, AM Partners, has been selected for a new 44,000-square-foot retail complex on the Las Vegas Strip. The $3.5 million Showcase Expansion project is across the street from the New York, New York Hotel and next to the MGM Grand Hotel. The two-story structure will give the appearance of the Grand Canyon, with "a false sky and a helicopter overhead," the architects said. Groundbreaking is scheduled for next month and completion is planned for April. The developer, M&K Enterprises, said it chose AM Partners after a national competition.AM Partners earlier designed retail projects for several Las Vegas hotels and the city's main airport.
Motorola may buy General Instruments
NEW YORK -- Motorola Inc. is in talks to acquire General Instrument Corp. in a deal that would unite one of the best-known consumer electronic makers with the cable industry's leading provider of TV set-top boxes, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.The acquisition would be a coup for Motorola, giving the company entrance into fast-growing "broadband" technology which combines Internet, television, radio and telephone services. Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola would pay about $10 billion in stock for Horsham, Pa.-based General Instruments, according to published reports today.
3Com to spin off Palm Computing unit
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- 3Com Corp. said today it plans to spin off its Palm Computing unit as an independently traded company. Palm Computing, maker of the popular PalmPilot hand-held electronic organizer, accounted for $570 million, or about 10 percent, of 3Com's fiscal 1999 sales of $5.77 billion. Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com expects to make an initial public offering for the unit in early 2000.
