Lady Dons get first win
By Al Chase
Star-BulletinSan Francisco ended 308 minutes of futility by scoring a goal that enabled the Lady Dons to win for the first time this season in the opener of the Outrigger Hotels No Ka Oi Wahine tournament at the UH Soccer Field yesterday.
The Lady Dons had not scored since 1 minute, 55 seconds of their second match and had been blanked in their last two matches.
The Weber State Wildcats, the defending Big Sky Conference champions, are still searching for that first goal and first victory of 1999.
With halftime near, sophomore midfielder Kelly McCall battled for and won a ball deep in the left corner. She slipped a short pass to freshman midfielder Stacey Caro, standing unmarked just outside the penalty box.
Caro turned and served a quick pass on the ground across the goal mouth, just eluding WSU goalkeeper Meaghan Thunell's save attempt.
Freshman midfielder Katie Mingst poked the ball into the net at the 40:15 mark and the USF defense held for a 1-0 win.
"We have not been converting the ball that well," said USF coach Jean Paul Verhees. "That's a bit of surprise because we do have fire power."
The Lady Dons (1-4) held WSU (0-3) to five shots and just one on goal.
Weber State goes after its first win today at 4 against the Hawaii Wahine.
