Another boxing
triumph for Viloria

Newly crowned world amateur boxing champion Brian Viloria of Waipahu stopped Russia's Ali Omarov at 1:56 of the third round to win the light flyweight gold medal in U.S. Olympic Cup competition at San Diego last night.

Referee Vasyi Kugayer halted the bout after Viloria capped a series of body blows with a left hook to Omarov's kidney.

Viloria, 18, had an 18-4 edge in blows landed, including a hard right that forced Omarov to take a standing 8-count to end the first round.

Isle women fail to qualify

Three Hawaii golfers failed in their bid to advance past the second stage of the LPGA Qualifying School yesterday. at the Mission HIlls Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Dawn Kaneshiro posted the best score of the three with a 72-hole total of 299, finishing in a tie for 51st place. Christel Tomori carded a 300 and Julie Miyagi, 302.

Jenny Rosales led the 30 qualifiers, winning by 13 strokes over runner-up Debbie Williams with a 72-hole total of 270.

The top 30 qualified.

The final qualifying round will be played at the LPGA International Championship Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.. Oct. 19-22.

Occhilupo nears surf title

Australian Mark Occhilupo remains on top of the world and only two events away from his first world pro surfing title after taking first place in the European Billabong Pro at Mundaka, Spain, yesterday.

Occhilupo, 33, defeated Brazilian Guilherme Herdy in the final, which was staged in solid 6- foot waves.

Occhilupo is now 800 points clear of nearest G-SHOCK Association of Surfing Professionals ratings rival Michael Campbell of Australia with two meets left.

Two quarterfinal finishes would guarantee Occhilupo of his first world title after 14 years of trying.

Conan Hayes, the last Hawaii surfer left in the event, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Australian Mark Bannister.

QB Club lineup

Speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting on Monday will be University of Hawaii president Kenneth Mortimer, UH assistant football coach Mike Cavanaugh and head football coach June Jones.

Also being honored are Sportspersons of the Month for August, Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball player Arlete Silva and world amateur boxing champion Brian Viloria.

Lunch at the Pagoda restaurant is served at 11:30 a.m. The program starts at noon. The public is invited.

Women-only triathlon

Hawaii's first all-female tria-thlon will take place tomorrow at Ko'Olina Resort The event -750-meter swim, 12-mile bike, 5K run - starts at 7 a.m.
