Ex-Dodgers live it up
Associated Press
in Los AngelesLOS ANGELES -- Three former Los Angeles Dodgers wearing New York Mets uniforms came back to make life miserable for their former team.
Orel Hershiser, Mike Piazza and Roger Cedeno did most of the damage in a 3-1 Mets victory over the Dodgers last night.
"I don't know how much of a big deal that is, being beaten by all those ex-Dodgers, but it makes for a nice story," Dodgers first baseman Eric Karros said.
"Orel threw the ball and had good movement on it. I don't think he was hitting his spots at all, but the ball was moving all over the place."
A week shy of his 41st birthday, Hershiser (13-10) pitched the way he did at age 30 -- when he won a Cy Young Award with 23 wins and a major league record 59-inning scoreless streak, before capping his signature season with a the World Series MVP trophy.
In eight innings, he limited the Dodgers to two hits -- a home run by Gary Sheffield and an infield hit by Mark Grudzielanek -- before retiring his last 15 batters.
"He had everything working," said Piazza, Hershiser's batterymate in Los Angeles from 1992-94.
Hershiser outdueled Kevin Brown (16-7) as the Mets trimmed Atlanta's NL East lead to three games and maintained a 3-game lead over Cincinnati in the wild-card race.
Piazza hit his 34th homer of the season in the sixth inning.
Piazza, traded by the Dodgers to Florida last season in a multiplayer deal that brought Sheffield to Los Angeles, is 15-for-46 against Los Angeles, with three homers and 10 RBIs.
