Readers tackle stadium
gridlock problem

'Football Express' buses will ferry fans tomorrow

Here are comments the Star-Bulletin received in response to the question: What do you think can be done to improve the traffic and parking situation at Aloha Stadium?

Richard Ringer, Kaimuki: "Inquire with the Navy about accessing Ford Island for parking. They do have a large old runway over there they don't use anymore. You can shuttle buses straight across from Ford Island."

John Werrill, Makiki: "Follow the procedures of the Great Aloha Run, and if you live on the Leeward side or even on the Windward side, take your car and leave it downtown and take the bus or buses -- hundreds of buses from downtown to the stadium."

Paul Maligro, Ewa Beach: "I believe that it can be squared away by opening all the gates, control how many cars will be entering the four or five gates, let all the cars enter free ... but my way is like in a supermarket. You go in a market free. The market is loaded with people and they pay in the line coming out."

Robert Rocha, downtown: "I think ways that they can improve the traffic and parking is to have shuttles, more shuttles running from downtown or the downtown area."

John Hausler, Pearl City: "Sell parking tickets at the same time you sell the regular event tickets and have a section of the stadium parking set off where you show up with four people in a car you get closer to the front."

Duane Arata, Manoa: "To alleviate the problem with the parking situation -- granted it's only 8,000 stalls for 50,000 fans -- they should maybe open the gates a little earlier than their expected time to help with the traffic congestion."
