HPU ups record
to 8-0

The Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team ranked No. 1 in NCAA Div. II, improved to 8-0 last night with a 15-4, 15-13, 15-6 victory over Bethel College at St. Andrew's Priory Gym.

Gisele Rocha had a match-high 13 kills and added 10 digs to help the Sea Warriors to their best start in school history.

Hawaii Pacific played without outside hitters Flavia Gabinio and Debbie Sant'Anna, who were rested after playing six matches in four days.

The Div. II defending national champions play Peru State tonight at St. Andrew's Priory, at 6 p.m.

HPU soccer wins

The Hawaii Pacific men's soccer team opened its season with a 4-1 victory over Willamette University yesterday at the Sea Warriors' windward campus field.

Leonard McKnight scored off a free kick in the first minute of the match. The Bearcats (0-2) tied on a goal by Chase Jordan in the 33rd minute. But Hawaii Pacific's Yovo Stefanov, Elie Sauma and Darren Juliano all scored in the second half.

The Sea Warriors were to play Willamette again this morning.

Sea Warrior women lose

The Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team remained winless on the season, falling to 0-2-1 with a 4-1 loss to Willamette yesterday at the Sea Warriors' windward campus field.

Jannicke Snildal scored for Hawaii Pacific - the Sea Warriors' first of the season - to tie Myrissa Olanda's school record for most goals in a career (14).

Dorian, Abubo upset

Hawaii's Shane Dorian, ranked No. 7 on the Association of Surfing professionals world tour, fell to lowly ranked Brazilian Guilherme Herdy during the second round of the Billabong Pro yesterday at Mundaka, Spain, and Anglet, France.

Hawaii's Andy Irons also was eliminated in round three, losing to Beau Emerton of Australia.

The big upset on the women's side was pulled off by Kate Skarratt of Australia, who beat Hawaii's Megan Abubo, ranked No. 3.
