Some football fans feel
there won't be another
sellout for a while'Bows know they have long way to go By Heather Tang
Star-BulletinAfter Saturday's lopsided loss to the University of Southern California, fans say it may be a while before there's another sellout of Aloha Stadium.
"I paid $21 to see only one touchdown and it was a score by the defense," said Joe Mayo of Moiliili, who said the Rainbow's performance was enough to make Saturday night's game the first and last he attends.
"I'm not surprised that UH lost, I was expecting it. USC is one of the top teams," said Clint Tada. "I'd go to another game. I don't think the games in the future will sell out, though."
Other fans are not ready to give up.
"They got a new program, it'll take awhile to get started. I think they needed to experience this loss, study it and try to improve from it. I think they'll do okay, they just need time to build up confidence," said Floyd Vergara of Honolulu.
Vergara says he plans to attend future Rainbow games to expose his sons to the game. "It's great that so many people came out to support them. As long as the local people support them, they'll do okay. It's not whether they win or loss but their spirit, just have to keep the support up."
"People expected a loss and got what they expected but (UH) tried their best. Both teams should be congratulated for acting with good sportsmanship," said Stanley Hironaka.
"It was bad to start the season playing a powerhouse team but you can't win 'em all. It's not just whether you win or lose, but your attitude," said the 66-year-old Kapahulu resident.
If there is ever to be another sell-out, fans who attended the game say something should be done about the traffic. Some freeway exits were so jammed Saturday, people parked their cars and started tailgating on the side of the road. Some said it took two hours to get to the stadium from Waikiki.
Said one fan, "If the traffic situation is like that again, people may be hesitant to attend again but with that score, I think attendance may drop off."
