Sea Warriors and
Seasiders meet in final

Defending NCAA Division II women's volleyball champion Hawaii Pacific and cross-island rival Brigham Young-Hawaii were both unbeaten as of last night's semifinal play in the Hawaiian Style Classic at Hilo.

The Sea Warriors (6-0) meet the Seasiders (10-0) for the tournament title today at 2:30 p.m., at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

HPU swept Hawaii-Hilo, 15-7, 15-5, 15-6, last night. Flavia Gabinio led the Sea Warriors with 13 kills.

BYU-Hawaii gained the title game with a 15-13, 15-4, 15-13 win over Cal State-San Bernardino. Vanessa Valansi had 24 kills and Arlete Silva 14 kills and 20 digs for the Seasiders.

National defensive honor for Crusader linebacker

St. Louis linebacker Ikaika Curnan was named Defensive Player of the Week ending Aug. 28 by the Dick Butkus Football Network.

Curnan was awarded for his nine tackles, - three for losses - and five hurries in only two quarters of play against West High of Salt Lake City. St. Louis won, 56-13.

St. Louis is ranked third in the nation by the Butkus network.

Waikiki Roughwater late deadline extended

The 30th annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim begins Monday at 9 a.m.

Registration has been extended to tomorrow, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., between the Hilton Hawaiian Village and Fort DeRussy. Look for the Waikiki Roughwater banner.

Trinity's Holland among best in her conference

Moanalua High School grad Katy Holland of the Trinity (Texas) University women's soccer team was named to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason team recently.

Holland was an All-SCAC first-team selection last season after scoring 11 goals for Trinity. She also was named a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Two isle athletes going to Missouri college

Football player Jonathan Kahananui of Waianae and wrestler Ryan Cabinian of Wahiawa will attend Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo., this fall.

Kahananui, a 1998 Waianae High School grad, previously attended Hawaii. Cabinian, a '95 Leilehua grad, went to Lassen Community College in California.

Jones at Na Koa meeting

Hawaii football coach June Jones will review the USC game and discuss next week's Eastern Illinois game during the Na Koa booster club meeting Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Waialae Country Club.

UHH cross-country coach

Jaime Guerpo, a former Honoka'a High School runner, has returned to the Big Island from a successful coaching stint at Azusa Pacific University in California to coach the Hawaii-Hilo cross-country team.
