Left defensive end: Contain the sweeps and the runs off tackle. Pressure passer and keep him in the pocket.

Left linebacker: First responsibility is to watch for running plays. Often comes hard off the edge to blitz vs. the pass.

Left cornerback: In cover one, cornerback usually locked in man- to-man. He also has zone respon- sibilities in covers two, three and four.

Right defensive tackle: Responsibilities are similar to left tackle. Penetrate the pocket vs. the pass, allowing blitzing backers to break free.

Right defensive end: Responsibilities mirror left side. Both can be involved in pass coverage during zone blitzes.

Right cornerback: Responsibilities are similar to left cornerback. Unlike some defensive packages, they won't be involved in field and boundary packages.

Right linebacker: Similar responsibilities as left linebacker. Both involved in coverage of tight ends and slotbacks.

Free safety: Is the enforcer down the middle. Can be involved in blitzes, but is often matched up with the slotback or helps cover deep zone.

Strong safety: Safeties are often interchangeable in this 4-3 package. Are the last line of defense against the run.

Middle linebacker: The main line of defense against running plays inside the tackle. Also is involved in blitz packages.
