Lowe takes Rip Curl
surfing title in France

Australian Michael Lowe won the first Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour final of his five-year career yesterday in the Hossegor Rip Curl Pro at Hossegor, France.

Lowe beat fellow Australian Michael Campbell in the final, 21.95-21.

Campbell shaded Hawaii's Sunny Garcia, 20.3-20.0, in the semifinals. Garcia had beaten Hawaii's Shane Dorian in the quarterfinals, 19.25-17.75.

"For me, it was kind of sweet revenge," Garcia said of his win over Dorian. "Shane beat me in the Australian Rip Curl Pro and I didn't want him to get the better of me twice in one year."

FOOTBALL FEVER

Oshiro wins contest opener

Fumio Oshiro of Hilo picked off the $500 prize in the season-opening Football Fever contest with a perfect 10-for-10 score.

Did the 66-year-old Oshiro, who retired four years ago after nearly 30 years with Hawaiian Airlines, have a special game plan for the college openers and NFL exhibition games?

"No," he said. "Nothing in particular. In the first part of the season, I kind of pick 'em at random."

Oshiro's perfecto was the first ballot drawn that beat the best score among celebrity panelists.

He has been taking part in the contest for four to five years and said he remembers making all the right picks just once before - "and I didn't mail that one in on time."

He said the $500 windfall might help him get a jump-start on holiday gift-shopping.

In addition to the prize money, Oshiro wins two tickets to the Rivals.com Hula Bowl Maui All-Star Football Classic.

Playing under the recently sanctioned international format of 25-point rally scoring, Team Canada won, 25-15, 27-25, 25-22.
