Kahuku blanks Castle
to start OIA season

Kala Latuselu rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Kahuku Red Raiders past the Castle Knights, 42-0, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association season-opening football game last night at Kahuku.

Orlando Wong scored twice for Kahuku on a 65-yard punt return and a 52-yard pass from sophomore Inoke Funaki, whose older brother Vai started at quarterback for the Red Raiders.

The Kahuku defense stymied the Castle running game; the Knights netting minus-29 yards on 14 carries.

Moanalua 41, Pearl City 10: At Moanalua, brothers Joey and John Bareng, and Shalomar and Saffery Silva accounted for all the Menehunes' touchdowns against the Chargers.

John Bareng rushed for 50 yards, including TDs of 2 and 35 yards. Joey Bareng scored from 4 yards out.

Shalomar Silva caught TD passes of 9 and 24 yards, while Saffery Silva returned an interception 65 yards.

Mililani 16, McKinley 14: At Mililani, Gavin Ng and Kekoa Lucas each caught first-quarter touchdown passes and the Trojans hung on to beat the Tigers.

McKinley's Augustine Nepo returned a punt 68 yards in the fourth quarter but the potential winning touchdown was disallowed because of a taunting penalty.

Ng also rushed for 112 yards on 12 carries for Mililani

Kailua 27, Leilehua 10: At Leilehua, Brada Choy-Foo stunned the Mules with three big-play touchdowns and the Surfriders drew away in the last quarter.

Choy-Foo caught a 41-yard TD pass from Taleki Mailau in the first quarter and returned a punt 36 yards for a third-quarter score.

Then, with Kailua clinging to a 13-10 lead in the fourth quarter, Choy Foo picked off a Leilehua pass in the flat and ran 60 yards for a touchdown.

The Surfriders sealed the victory with another long strike, a 58-yard TD pass from Mailau to Rocky Alo.

Waipahu 15, Campbell 6: At Campbell, Nefu Mageo connected with Jonah Wilson on a game-breaking 53-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as the Marauders downed the Sabers.

Waipahu took an 8-0 lead into the final quarter. Bronson Beyer's 17-yard scoring run closed the gap but the Sabers failed on a two-point conversion try.

Mageo then beat a Campbell blitz and hit Wilson for the insurance score.
