Kealiiwahamana
will be honored

Mug shot Singer Nina Kealiiwahamana will be honored at tonight's Ka Himeni Ana concert at the Hawaii Theatre. Nina's late mother, Vickie I'i Rodrigues, was the honoree in 1995. The purpose of the Ka Himini Ana (old-fashioned singing) concert is to encourage the singing of Hawaiian music without amplification, as it was done in earlier days. The concert is sponsored by R.M. Towill Corp. Mahi Beamer will play the organ before the competition begins. C. Keola Beamer is emcee. Tonight's judges are honoree Kealiiwahamana, Haunani Apoliona and Bill Kaiwa. Richard Towill will present the awards ...

It's 'Hawaii Five-0'

Edgy Lee's "Paniolo O Hawaii," a documentary about Hawaii's cowboys, was shown in L.A. last weekend and received an excellent review from L.A. Times reviewer Kevin Thomas. But Thomas needs a refresher course on isle history. He writes: "How many people, outside Hawaii, have been aware that the 49th state has cowboys?" The "49th state?" Come on, pard, it's "Hawaii Five-0," the 50th state! ...

Kid actor Haley Joel Osment, 11, is great in "The Sixth Sense," the very clever thriller with Bruce Willis. One spooky scene had me literally jumping out of my seat ... Rene Russo is a gorgeous fashion plate in an arty and entertaining "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Pierce Brosnan ... Joan Rodby says that people were so pleased with the salute to Emma Veary and Kapahulu last week that they want a repeat ...The National Youth Choir of Great Britain performs tomorrow, 7:30 p.m., at Central Union ...

Pete Newell's Big Man Basketball Camp was held here last week and the big men, with leaders Newell and Merv Lopes, stayed at the Hawaii Prince. They wound up their stay with a banquet at the prince golf club. a chipping contest was held in which the big men targeted life-size posters of Penny Hardaway and Kobe Bryant. The prince's "big man," 6-foot-6 executive Donn Takahashi, who usually towers over most people, was just one of the guys at this party ...

Japan's Nittai Ebara High School golf team held a week-long summer camp at Turtle Bay this week. Arriving at the resort's Links at Kuilima, each of the 34 golfers carried a small cloth bag. The team's coach, Shichiro Yamashita, asked if they could fill divots as they played; not only their divots but those made by other players as well. Kuilima's Toshiko Wight happily had their bags filled with sand so they could fill the divots ... Ko Olina has a Kamaaina Day Sept. 10 with green fees of $30, a 25 percent discount on food and a 20 percent discount on pro shop merchandise ...

Sam's ready

"Eighty percent of our employees are still with us after four years," said Sam Choy Wednesday at the fourth anniversary of his Diamond Head restaurant. "I'm excited. We're ready for the millennium. The millennium will be incredible for us at Sam Choy's." Honolulu the Band, and Hawaiian Time played music as guests hit tables packed with food and wine. Outside the eatery, members of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees union picketed, charging unfair labor practices at Sam Choy's at the Keauhou Beach Resort ... Jean Anderson at Michel's Thursday was pumped up over her grandsons, Iolani basketball stars Cord and Brad Anderson, getting a shot as extras in "Baywatch." Michel's server Robbie Baltch is also an extra, hoping for more work as a lifeguard in the show ...
