A 34-year-old Halawa prison inmate was arrested last night in connection with two Waikiki slayings.

The suspect was arrested for the May 17 strangling death of Fred Cramer and the Aug. 19 murder of Keith Miyashiro, police said.

Authorities apprehended the suspect Wednesday for parole violations.

He was on parole during the time of the two murders, police said.

Police said they obtained information that led to his arrest.

However, homicide Lt. Allen Napoleon today declined comment on what evidence or clues led to the the suspect's arrest, saying only that the investigation is "ongoing."

Detectives also were investigating whether there were other suspects involved in the murders.

However, Napoleon said it doesn't appear likely.

Cramer, 81, a longtime Honolulu Symphony volunteer, was found bound and gagged in the bedroom of his Cleghorn Street apartment.

According to the medical examiner, he was strangled and suffocated.

Neighbors had described Cramer as a friendly and personable man who always was helping out.

Miyashiro, 49, a clerk at Waikiki Video Sales & Rentals, was found unconscious by a customer in a storage room of the Kuhio Avenue store.

An autopsy showed Miyashiro died from a skull fracture caused by blunt force, a homicide detective said.

The suspect was booked for two counts of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

He is being held at the police department's cellblock while awaiting charges.
