Garcia, Robb,
Dorian win surf
heats in France

Sunny Garcia, Kalani Robb and Shane Dorian of Hawaii worked their way to impressive second-round wins in the Hossegor Rip Curl Pro surf meet at Les Bourdaines, France, yesterday.

Garcia eliminated French wildcard Mikael Picon, who last year ousted the Hawaiian in the same round. Robb posted the highest score of the day - 24.5 points out of 30 - in his victory over Australia's Shane Wehner.

Dorian also won his heat, advancing to round 3, but fellow Hawaii pros Ross Williams and Shawn Sutton were eliminated.

Twelve of 16 men's second-round heats and the remainder of women's second-round competition were completed.

Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo had advanced earlier to the women's third round.

Hawaii Pacific spikes Regis

Newcomer Flavia Gabinio, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Brazil, led defending NCAA II volleyball champion Hawaii Pacific to a 15-11, 15-10, 15-2 season-opening victory over Regis (Colo.) last night at St. Andrew's Priory Gym.

Gambinio had 14 kills and a match-high .458 kill percentage for the top-ranked Sea Warriors. Hai Yan Wang and Debbie Sant'Anna each added 11 kills.

Amie Schneider led the fifth-ranked Rangers (0-2) with nine kills.

Scholarship Golf winner will get Palmer trophy

The Golf Media Association of Hawaii will award the Arnold Palmer Trophy to the amateur golfer with the lowest gross score at its first Scholarship Golf Tournament, Oct. 1, at the Coral Creek Golf Course.

The tournament will help fund the newly established Bill Gee Memorial Scholarship and Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship. Gee and Ito, both now deceased, were golf writers for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser, respectively.

Prince Cup tomorrow

The third annual Prince Cup tennis tournament will take place tomorrow starting at 4 p.m. at the Maui Prince Hotel tennis courts.

The Cup consists of a Maui Prince team and a Hawaii Prince team competing for three hours of doubles, including men's women's and mixed doubles.

The Maui Prince won the last two tournaments.
